Liberian Summer Outreach

Over the years, Trinity has been especially blessed by the many Liberians who have worshipped with us and have become a part of our congregation. Of the more than 300,000 Liberians in the US, the state of Rhode Island has more Liberians than any other state, and Providence maintains one of the three largest Liberian immigrant communities in America.

Because God, in his providence, has brought so many Liberians to our region and in particular to our church, we at Trinity have always had a heart for and have focused our outreach efforts on the Liberian community.

For example, throughout the academic year, Reformed University Fellowship students from Brown and RISD, together with Trinity members, volunteer their Saturday mornings to Love in Action, a program to tutor Liberian children.

In the Summer of 2006, Trinity held its first Backyard Bible Club, a week-long outreach to elementary-age Liberian children in Providence. Two years later, we expanded our ministry to include a three-day, evening Youth Sports Camp for Junior High students. In 2010 we held our first Liberian luncheon on the Sunday following these events. We invited children and their families to join us for worship and a fellowship meal to recognize the children who participated and to get to know their families.

Each year, many members and regular attenders of Trinity volunteer their time and talents to make the Liberian summer outreach a success. As we begin the planning process for 2012, it is helpful to get an idea how individuals might be able to participate in this outreach. Although, we are considering separating the events to avoid over burdening Trinity volunteers, it is our preference to have enough people to help so that we can continue to hold all of these events within the same week. We are currently considering the following dates:

  • Backyard Bible Club
    Monday, 7/30 - Friday, 8/3
    9:00 - 11:30 AM

  • Youth Sports Camp
    Tuesday, 7/31 - Thursday, 8/2
    6:00 - 8:00 PM

  • Liberian Luncheon
    Sunday, 8/5
    following worship

Please indicate the areas in which you might be able to assist. It is not necessary to be available every day of the event. If multiple members of a family are interested in participating, please fill out individual forms. This is not intended to be a commitment; its purpose is to provide input as we begin the planning process.

Your service to Trinity and the Liberian families in our community is very much appreciated.
